The 2016 Grand National Roadster Show

The Grand-Daddy of them All.

OK, I will say it. I usually don’t pay to get into shows. If not a media pass, then it’s with a buddy or vendor who has an extra pass. Some would say I am cheap, other’s frugal. I go for the latter. However, there are several shows throughout the year I don’t mind paying for: Mooneyes X-Mas Party and Drags, Cruisin’ for a Cure and the Grand National Roadster Show. More than a car show, The Grand National Roadster Show is an important event in our industry. Many companies spend thousands, if not hundreds of thousands to present and show their creations. Some of the most incredible cars are built specifically to compete for “America’s Most Beautiful Roaster” or AMBR trophy.

This year was no different. There were those vehicles that just had bills thrown at them like a hot dancer at a top club. This year, America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award went to Darryl and Terri Hollenbeck’s 1932 Ford Hot Rod Roadster. A subtle traditional style green hi-boy. I imagine this award is prestigious enough that my words won’t add anything, except a big congratulations to a very talented team.

The show in Building Four is important to most. However, I dig seeing people who I know busted some knuckles working on their own cars and actually driving them! For that I go to all the other buildings and the drive-in outdoor show on Saturday. In a more personal take, I am very proud of my fellow Mercifuls; Jack and Gordon for having their cars in the Suede Palace. First for any member of the club. Gordon’s lavender ’58 Cadillac with a heavy silver flake roof captured the attention of many at the show. Jack’s custom green ’57 Pontiac Star Chief is as traditional as they get for ’60’s mild customs. Jack gave his “Awe Shucks” as he accepted the trophy for Best Custom.

I was on a mission. My goal was to get as much content as I could at the show as I ran through the buildings and interviewed several friends. I interviewed BOMONSTER, John at ACME Speed Shop, Ron from Cambra Speed Shop, Dixie Rebelle and of course some of the Mercifuls about their cars in the Suede Palace. (click the links to see videos of each interview)

We flooded our BlacktopTV channel on YouTube with 6 short videos from the show. While at the show we also broadcasted a couple of Periscope live videos and posted on our favorite social networks.

Enjoy the photos and videos.
