Imagine a nice grass lawn park rimmed by a variety of trees; Eucalyptus, Palms, and Pine Trees. A large man-made pond with an island and rope bridge in one corner, clubhouse, amphitheater, rows of picnic tables and pass-through kitchen. All this in the middle of a suburban Southern Californian city. Flanked by houses built in the late 50’s and strip malls from the 1970’s.
That imagination is Kiwanisland in Garden Grove, CA. Nearly 200 cars arrive on a Sunday morning in September. Most everyone knows each other at this show. Each one was personally invited with a flyer from a cruise night or other car show for 4 months prior. Steve Sanders, a long-time Kiwanis Garden Grove member always invites me over to the show and I set up a booth with a Hot Wheels Track for kids to play. The show features a great bar-b-cue lunch, probably the largest raffle prize table around, Star Wars characters walking around, and vendors. To start the show, the local Boy Scout Troop raises the flag with a wonderful ceremony and Pledge of Allegiance.
