The Hard Knox Chopper Ball is a drag race and car show put on by the Hard Knox Car Club of Anderson South Carolina. This years show was held at the historic Greer Dragway in Greer South Carolina. Greer is located off interstate 85 in North Western, South Carolina, about half way between Greensboro and Spartanburg, South Carolina. This area of South Carolina is known as car central of South Carolina. There is a lot of drag racing and round track racing and lots of car shows, that goes on in this part of South Carolina. If you are a car person this is the part of South Carolina you want to live in. Greer Dragway is the best know of the several drag strips in this area of South Carolina. The Hard Knox car club is one of several car clubs in this area also it is the 16th year running that the Hard Knox club has been putting on this two day show.
Things start up late on Friday afternoon about 4PM when participant and vendors started rolling in to setup and start testing and tuning their cars. The gates opened about 8AM on Saturday when more of the drag racer, car show participant and spectators started rolling in to stake out their place on the grounds of the drag strip. Close to a hundred cars and a number of motor cycles set up on the lower end of the drag strip for the car show. About 50 to 75 drag cars filled the pits for racing. The spectator set up on the hill that over looked the strip. There must have been at least 2000 spectators on hand for this years’ event.
Qualifying got started about noon and racing started right after. There was a purse of about $4000.00 to be given out to winners of the different classes. There were classes in Harley Drag Bike, Gassers and Nostaglia Modified. Winners in those classes received $500.00. Class winers in the car show received $100.00 and a trophy. Drag racing ended about 4PM and the Miss Hard Knox Pinup contest was held. There were fifteen gals that took part in the contest with the winner receiving the $100.00 prize.
All and all it was a great afternoon of drag racing and showing cars. This is one show you should not miss. Next years show will proably be held about the same time so keep checking the Hard Knox club page for next years date and mark your calendar.
