Installing the black-out HOG KIT Air Horns from Kleinn.
You may remember about 5 years ago we installed the chrome Hog Kit from Kleinn on Tony’s ’04 Road King Custom “Down Payment Blues”. (See the article here) Today we are upgrading the kit with their black version which wasn’t available 5 years ago.
If you don’t know, the Hog Kit is a pair of air horns for 1979 and later Harley-Davidson motorcycles with the “bell” style horn covers. There is a small compressor that sits behind the bell and a pair of trumpets in front. It uses your stock horn button and replaces the weak electric horn. As I said before, I don’t believe in the addage of “loud pipes saves lives” because the exhaust sound is being pushed behind you. These air horns point to the front to get the attention of those in your way, or coming in your way. I have used them countless times when texters are moving into my lane ahead of me. You can certainly tell when they hear them.
We found Kleinn made a few great upgrades to the kit in the past 5 years. The main bracket is modified with gussets holding the horns and compressor. And all the mounts feature rubber shock absorbers. The unit hangs from the single bolt for the stock horn and it does vibrate quite a bit. You might notice, I use a rubber hose for the horns. The kit comes with a length of clear plastic hose, but it melt on me on my first ride out. The black hose works great with the blacked out kit. I am not sure, but I could swear this new kit is louder. The compressor is a bit different from the first iteration, but I don’t see anything in their specs.
All in all it is great to see the upgrades and really appreciate Kleinn for thinking of us bikers on the road.
