A Historic Landmark Celebrates Two Years from the Wrecking Ball
Bob’s Big Boy Broiler in Downey has been a landmark destination since the 1950’s. Hailed as a jewel of Googie architecture, this eatery has taken several forms and a lawsuit with rumors of jail-time for a landlord who ordered a wrecking ball to tear it down to make another parking lot, got saved by some do-gooder citizens and now we have a great hangout again! Whew! How’s that for a run-on sentence Mr. Woodrow. (my H.S. English Teacher)
A little show that was a BIG hit. I guess they don’t call it Big Boy for nuttin. For a simple burger joint car show, they had an action packed day of goodies. The kids (and adults alike) enjoyed a Hot Wheels drag race, then later before sunset the ladies came on stage for a Pinup Contest hosted by The Pinup Magazine. Although not the winner, we favored Smitten Kitten as she posed after the show with some of the cars and bikes in attendance. Look for a feature on this up and coming pinup star as our next Blacktop Betty!
The event benefitted Soldiers Angels and Ladies of Liberty. There were lovely young ladies from the Downey Princess Society selling raffle tickets and taking donations for the cause. Mr. Twinkie was there too to share some good old fashioned Twinkies for the crowd.
The day went quick and as you can see there were plenty of great cars and bikes baking in the sun. We are fortunate that the wrecking ball didn’t have it’s way and that what was destroyed was built back again. As my buddy Jack says, don’t destroy ’em, restore ’em.
