I have written about Bedlam at the Broiler for Ol’ Skool Rodz three times now. I wanted to do something a bit different for each article. The last article, I penned it as if I was a 70-something year old man remembering cruisin’ as a kid to Harvey’s Broiler in ’56. The time before that, I wrote it as if I was the guy I saw early in the parking lot to set up the Blacktop booth. Some dude was sleeping in a Riviera waking up as everyone is starting up the car show. Vendors are setting up, cars start rolling in, the stage is getting set for a really bitchen show.
I missed last year? Oh yeah, I had that store and all.
So when Leo called and asked if I would come out, I couldn’t resist to get the boys in the Mercifuls together and head on over to the show. We met at Jack’s house and rolled up together. Jack in his incredible ’57 Pontiac, I followed him in my ’56 Fairlane, Gordon followed me in his lavender ’58 Cadillac and Jerry picked up the rear in his smooth ’56 Chevy. Gary showed up later in his ’56 Mercury.
As we roll in, I notice in the back lot next to the stage is a wrestling ring.
What the????
Looks like I didn’t pay too much attention to the flyer. Probably because, once I heard about the show, I put it in my calendar. Never really looked at the flyer. Great surprise!
That Leo. He get’s a call late at night before the event from the wrastlin’ group. They are going to set up the ring when they finish the event they are at doing now. Most likely be there by midnight. They didn’t get there till after 2am and Leo was there till 3:45am THE MORNING OF THE SHOW! What a long day.
The show went really well. I like this show because it is just chill. It’s not a big show starts later than most. 10am. It goes a bit too late, for me, but everyone was having a great time.
More girls than cars.
Oh, and there aint nothing wrong with that. Yep. That’s what I saw. This is a small show that packs quite a punch. A sexy one at that. There had to be more girls than the 40 or so cars that were there. The ladies were there for the pinup contest. A popular favorite. So much so, that EVERYONE had a camera out. So many people shooting photos there was not much sense shooting a bunch. I did see a fairly well-known photographer without a camera! He was there enjoying the show. One photog got shit-faced wasted and actually posted a picture of himself hugging the porcelain god the morning after!
The pinup contest was co-hosted by Miss Boston Bombshell and K Von Spun as they brought out the girls for three presentations on stage. There was also a “Little Miss Bedlam” contest for the kiddies. The pinup contests were judged by Sizzling Sweet Pea, Pinup Sunshine, and Valerie Valentine.
I remember missing the show last year. It just wasn’t a summer in Southern California, if you don’t make it to this show. Sure there were only a few cars, but it was really a cultural show. Rockin’ music, fantastic ladies, friendly mom-pop vendors and some cool cars too. Great work, Patty Rangel and Leo Rods.
