A legacy ends. Since 2006 Mooneyes has been hosting their X-mas Show and Drags at Irwindale Speedway (including three years as a New Years Show when the date changed to January) What makes this show really awesome is the whole scope. Not just a car show, but drag races, huge vendor area, live music, and finishes off with a Mitzi and Co Pinup Contest.
The lot is reserved for pre 1972 vehicles of all makes, models and levels of completion. You will see home projects, and high quality show cars. Clubs hang out together and usually are cooking some great food always ready to share with the passer-by that shows interest in their vehicles.
On the dragstrip there are professional racers and novices alike making runs down the 1/8th mile strip. I heard one guy complaining about a 14 second car. “Why would he take that car on the track.” The obvious response: “Because he is having fun with his car!” That’s the vibe of this event. Having fun with friends around your vehicles without the pressure of trying to “win” anything. You win when you are at the show.
I only hope that Shige and Chico find a new location. Could it be the Fairplex in Pomona, Barona Raceway, or even Famoso in Bakersfield. No matter what, it will be a scene not to be missed.
