66 Motor Palace

Story/Photos: T-Bone

I could show you, but I can’t tell you.

I had a great opportunity to meet up with Brian and Lori Law last month. I’ve ran into Lori several times at various car shows and events. She is a Gasoline Girl and has an awesome ’48 Ford truck that we used for a photoshoot for Rare Part’s new/old pitman arms.

What I didn’t know was…

This couple are true gearhead fanatics. They have a garage at Restoration Row in Orange where they tinker with their various projects, bikes, cars, antiques, but mostly bikes. Motorbikes that is. I found out that they recently purchased a historic building in downtown Winslow AZ. But not just any building. You see, Brian has been on the hunt for the “Motor Palace” that an old hippie friend of the family told him about (as a kid) in the late 1960’s. The elusive Motor Palace has haunted their trips through the desert for decades.

The building they picked up was a notorious old bar and even had a holding cell in the back where they kept records of the inmates to get compensated from the State. I has cat ghosts and a rumor of a  Model T buried in a tunnel about 50 feet from the front door. The building needs some work, the previous owners lost interest in the restoration and the permits expired. A little wrangling with the city and the restoration is underway. Not necessarily the Motor Palace of the hippies lore, but this IS the Motor Palace today.

While the restoration is completing Brian and Lori have opened the front of their Restoration Row shop in Orange as the Motor Palace with genuine Dickies 1922 Collection, Schott NYC, Chuchill Gloves, Artex Knitting Mills, Troy Lee Designs, Jeff Decker Hippodrone Studios, and others as well as cool vintage goods.
