A Second Father’s Day Tradition

It was two years ago when we were looking for something new to do on Father’s Day. (There are only so many deuces you can see in your lifetime.) When my father came out from the desert we decided to hit the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance. In 2011 the theme was “The Art of Italian Motoring”. Here’s a link to that article. This year the theme was “Jet Age”. A fan of the “Populuxe” era of 1955-65, we had to make this event. Big fins, plenty of chrome and jet influences, I’m there.
As you see there were some incredible cars such as a Round Door Rolls, a Ghia bodied Streamline, plenty of Mid-Century American Cars, and I guess, since it’s LA a Batmobile and the Green Hornet car. There were even some cars that I wouldn’t consider “Jet Age” such as woodies and big old Packards as well as a junky rat truck and a set of motorcycles. It was definitely a scene much bigger than two years ago. We got there before it officially started and “The Drive” was already packed. The featured marque was Porsche 911’s which I personally don’t see has much of a “Jet Age” influence. Most likely an influence of the local dealership sponsor dollars. Suggestion: Get there early, walk the show, people watch and then leave to enjoy the rest of the day.
