Cable Air Show

By Gary Morin

Getting Down on What Goes Up.

[I met Maniac-Mike early on a Wednesday morning during the weekly Speedway Riders Breakfast at his café at Cable Airport. Cable is the largest privately owned airport in the world. At over 100 acres the airport was built by Mikes grandfather in 1945. Imagine the scene in the hey day of flying, the 1960’s, as Cable was the go to spot for regular shuttles from everywhere between Vegas, Palm Springs, LA, and Catalina. Fast forward a month and they are presenting their 37th Air Show! We sent expert shooter Gary Morin out there to tell the story. BTW, if you are in Upland take a moment and visit Maniac Mikes Café. It is a total throwback to the 50’s. (actually, it may just be the real thing) They have great food at reasonable prices and the views are spectacular. – T-Bone]

Grab my camera, out the door to drive out to Upland CA to see the 37th Annual Cable Air Show and Car Show.  This is the first time I’ve attended this show and was surprised how close to the action you are. Almost anywhere in the airport your not far from the flight line.

Biplanes flying low overhead and a bright yellow aerobatic plane called Tumbling Bear piloted by Rob Harrison doing loops and, stalls high in the sky.  Many homebuilt and antique aircraft flying low over the runway right in front of you. If you like to fly, you can take a flight in several planes offering rides for a fee. Not for me, I like my feet on the ground.

Oh did I say there were historical vehicles on parade and a car show.  Great photo op for me, shooting the hot rods and classic cars with antique aircraft in the back ground was a treat. Needless to say I will be back next year. If you like wheels and wings, this show is a must see.
