Installing an AIRAID Intake System

Not to be outdone, Billy installs an AIRAID Cold Air Dam Intake System with the SynthaMax non-oiled air cleaner on his truck “Blacktop Baller”.

Last month you may recall we installed a different brand on our similar shop truck a 2005 RAM 1500 Magnum Hemi. For Billys truck, an ’07, he wanted an AIRAID setup. We went online and easily found the system we needed. Part #:301-220. It arrived before the next weekend and we were ready to install.

The system is easy to install. Here’s how we did it and a bit of suggestions for the instruction kit.

After removing the factory equipment, we followed the instructions provided to properly install the kit. We blocked off about two hours to do the job, which we got done in about half the time.

The AIRAID System uses the stock mounting bracket for their box. The instructions suggest to install the Cold Air Dam (CAD) then install all the accoutrements to the CAD under the hood. Difficult for Billy to do with his paralysis, so we removed the box and proceeded to install all the attachments to the CAD on the workbench, then install under the hood.

While Billy was doing that, I crawled up under the hood to install the tube to the throttle body and plug in the factory air intake temperature sensor. Next up was connecting the breather hose to the box. Before we knew it, we were done.

Double checking all the fasteners and making sure there was no foreign materials in the airway we clamped on the filter and rolled it out of the garage to test.

What a nice sound the AIRAID system has. The big open breather and filter area made for a real throaty sound under the hood at light and heavy throttle. At idle you don’t notice it, but just a half step on the go-pedal and theres a “WHOOOP” sound. As Billy says: “It sounds like a truck now.”

I replied that it was a quick install maybe a one-beer job on the beer/complexity scale. Billy replied: “I’m messed up enough, I don’t need that stuff.”

We had it installed on the truck for nearly a month now and we found no difference in fuel economy but a noticeable boost in torque. AIRAID’s dyno tests show an additional 20 horsepower and 22 ft/lbs of torque! And, did we say it sounds great?!
